LinkedIn Profile Optimization Checklist: 15 Things Most People Miss
Published January 28, 2026
Your LinkedIn profile isn't a resume—it's a landing page. Every section is an opportunity to attract clients, recruiters, or partners. But most profiles fail at this because they focus on past accomplishments instead of future value.
I've reviewed thousands of LinkedIn profiles across industries. The best profiles—the ones that generate inbound leads—share common elements that 95% of people miss. This checklist covers all 15.
1. The Headline: Your Value Proposition (Not Your Job Title)
What most people do:
"Senior Marketing Manager at TechCorp"
What works:
"Helping B2B SaaS companies generate 50K+ qualified leads per month | Marketing Strategy"
Why it matters: Your headline appears in search results, connection requests, and comments. It's your first (and sometimes only) impression.
Formula: [Who you help] + [What result you deliver] + [How/Specialty]
Checklist:
- ✅ Includes target audience (who you help)
- ✅ Highlights specific results or value
- ✅ Uses keywords for searchability
- ✅ Under 220 characters
- ✅ No buzzwords like "guru" or "ninja"
2. The Profile Photo: Professional but Approachable
Profiles with photos get 21x more views and 36x more messages. But not just any photo—the wrong one can hurt you.
Checklist:
- ✅ High resolution (400x400 minimum)
- ✅ Recent photo (within 2 years)
- ✅ Professional attire for your industry
- ✅ Smiling or approachable expression
- ✅ Solid background or subtle blur
- ✅ Face takes up 60% of frame
- ✅ Good lighting (no shadows on face)
Avoid: Group photos, vacation shots, sunglasses, heavy filters, or anything cropped from a party.
3. The Banner Image: Your Visual Brand Statement
Most people ignore the banner. Big mistake—it's prime real estate (1584 x 396 pixels).
Use it for:
- Your company logo and tagline
- A positioning statement ("Helping businesses scale with automation")
- Social proof (client logos or testimonials)
- Your personal brand colors
Checklist:
- ✅ Custom banner (not the default blue)
- ✅ Includes positioning statement or value prop
- ✅ High quality (1584x396px)
- ✅ Text is readable on mobile
- ✅ Consistent with your brand colors
Tools: Canva has free LinkedIn banner templates.
4. The Custom URL: Clean and Professional
Default LinkedIn URLs look like: linkedin.com/in/john-smith-a83b19234
Custom URLs look like: linkedin.com/in/johnsmith
Why it matters: Cleaner for business cards, email signatures, and search engine results.
Checklist:
- ✅ Claimed your custom URL
- ✅ Uses your name (or brand)
- ✅ No numbers or random characters
- ✅ Easy to remember and type
How to change: Edit profile → Edit public profile & URL → Custom URL
5. The About Section: Tell Your Story (With Results)
This is where most profiles become boring resumes. The About section should be a story, not a list of jobs.
Structure that works:
- Hook: Open with the problem you solve or your mission
- Story: Brief background (how you got here)
- Value: What you do and who you help
- Proof: Results, numbers, client wins
- CTA: How people can work with you or reach out
Example opening:
"Most B2B SaaS companies waste 60% of their marketing budget on leads that never convert. I help them fix that."
Checklist:
- ✅ First 2 lines are compelling (shows in preview)
- ✅ Tells a story, not a resume
- ✅ Includes specific numbers and results
- ✅ Uses "you" and "your" (not just "I" and "me")
- ✅ Ends with a clear CTA
- ✅ Includes keywords for search (but naturally)
- ✅ 3-5 paragraphs, easy to skim
Avoid: Walls of text, third-person bios ("John is a marketing expert…"), and buzzword overload.
6. The Featured Section: Showcase Your Best Work
This section sits right below your About—perfect for social proof.
What to feature:
- Case studies or client results
- Published articles or media appearances
- Portfolio work or projects
- Testimonials or recommendations
- Lead magnets (eBook, checklist, templates)
Checklist:
- ✅ Featured section is populated (not empty)
- ✅ Includes 3-5 high-quality items
- ✅ Items have custom thumbnails (not generic)
- ✅ Titles are benefit-driven ("How We 3X'd Conversion Rates")
- ✅ Descriptions explain the value
7. The Experience Section: Focus on Impact, Not Tasks
Your job descriptions should highlight results, not responsibilities.
Bad: "Managed social media accounts and created content."
Good: "Grew LinkedIn following from 2K to 50K in 18 months, generating 300+ qualified leads per month through organic content."
Checklist (per job):
- ✅ Starts with results, not duties
- ✅ Includes numbers (revenue, growth %, team size)
- ✅ Uses action verbs (led, built, scaled, launched)
- ✅ Mentions tools/technologies when relevant
- ✅ 3-5 bullet points max (not a novel)
- ✅ Includes media (images, links, videos)
8. The Skills Section: Strategic Keyword Placement
Skills affect search rankings. Recruiters and prospects filter by skills.
Checklist:
- ✅ 50 skills listed (LinkedIn's max)
- ✅ Top 3 skills are your core strengths
- ✅ Skills match your headline and About
- ✅ Mix of hard skills (Salesforce) and soft skills (Leadership)
- ✅ Endorsed by at least 10 people (ask colleagues)
- ✅ No outdated skills (Flash, outdated tools)
Pro tip: Add skills that your target audience searches for, not just what you're good at.
9. Recommendations: Social Proof That Sells
Profiles with recommendations convert better. They're third-party validation.
Checklist:
- ✅ At least 5 recommendations
- ✅ From diverse sources (clients, managers, colleagues)
- ✅ Include specific results ("increased revenue by 40%")
- ✅ Recent (within 2 years)
- ✅ You've given recommendations (reciprocity works)
How to get them: Ask specific people for specific feedback. "Could you write a quick rec about our project where we increased conversions by 30%?"
10. The Volunteer/Causes Section: Build Trust
People buy from people they like. Volunteering humanizes you.
Checklist:
- ✅ Includes 1-2 volunteer roles
- ✅ Describes impact (not just "volunteered")
- ✅ Relevant to your industry when possible
11. Accomplishments: Credentials That Matter
Certifications, publications, languages—if it's relevant, add it.
Checklist:
- ✅ Certifications are current (not expired)
- ✅ Publications are linked
- ✅ Languages listed with proficiency
- ✅ Awards include context ("Top 10 Sales Rep, 2024")
12. Creator Mode: Turn On for Content Distribution
Creator Mode changes your profile to prioritize content over connections.
Benefits:
- Follow button appears (people can follow without connecting)
- Featured section appears at top
- Your posts reach more people
Checklist:
- ✅ Creator Mode enabled (if you post regularly)
- ✅ 5 topics selected (helps LinkedIn categorize your content)
13. Contact Info: Make It Easy to Reach You
Don't make people hunt for your email.
Checklist: Learn more about LinkedIn About Section . Learn more about LinkedIn Headline Formula . Learn more about LinkedIn Headline Tips .
- ✅ Email address listed
- ✅ Website URL (if applicable)
- ✅ Phone number (if comfortable)
- ✅ Twitter, GitHub, or other relevant links
14. Activity: Stay Visible
Profiles that post regularly rank higher in search and stay top of mind.
Checklist:
- ✅ Post at least 1-2x per week
- ✅ Engage with others' content (comment meaningfully)
- ✅ Share articles or insights (not just company news)
- ✅ Activity shows in "Featured" section
15. Privacy Settings: Control What People See
Make sure your profile is public (otherwise, you're invisible in searches).
Checklist:
- ✅ Profile is set to Public
- ✅ Headline and summary visible to everyone
- ✅ Profile URL is searchable on Google
- ✅ Activity broadcasts are ON (if you want visibility)
Final Profile Grade: How Do You Stack Up?
Count how many checkboxes you ticked:
- 45-50: A+ profile (top 5%)
- 35-44: Strong profile (top 20%)
- 25-34: Average (needs work)
- Under 25: Underoptimized (big opportunity)
The Bottom Line
Your LinkedIn profile is a 24/7 salesperson. Every section matters. Optimize it once, and it works for you forever.
Action plan:
- Print this checklist
- Review your profile section by section
- Fix the gaps (start with headline, photo, About)
- Ask 3 colleagues for recommendations
- Update every 3-6 months
The profiles that win are the ones that make it easy for people to understand your value in 10 seconds.
